CHAPTER NINE

SARAH WASN’T sure what woke her on Sunday morning. The sun filtered through her bedroom curtains, playing on her eyelids and causing her to squint until her eyes became accustomed to the light. The window was slightly ajar to let in some fresh air, and the curtain wafted a little on the faint breeze. It was pleasant, just lying here in bed, doing nothing, but then the creak of van doors being opened had her sitting bolt upright and paying attention.

Lexie barked. Through the open window Sarah heard the sound of male voices coming from the yard. Blinking to wake herself up properly, she glanced at the clock on her bedside table. It was seven o’clock.

Pulling on her robe, she went to the window and looked out, her eyes widening as she saw Daniel and his friend unloading wood from the back of the Ford Transit van. Relief washed over her - late last night when she’d rung to enquire, Daniel was still being held at the station, but it seemed Martin had worked his magic and managed to get him out on bail after all. When he’d called her yesterday, Martin had said Daniel wouldn’t be released until the police finished searching his home and his van and any other property that might be considered relevant. Presumably they’d done that.

She hurried to get washed and dressed and went downstairs, anxious to find out what had been going on. Switching on the kettle, she made tea and then took two mugs of the piping hot brew out to the lads.

‘How are you doing?’ she asked, going over to the barn and looking up to where they were already beginning to work on the roof. ‘I wasn’t expecting you - it’s so good to see you here.’

They stopped what they were doing and came down the ladder, accepting the teas gratefully. ‘Cheers, thanks for this,’ Daniel said. Josh acknowledged her with a lift of his mug before taking a sip. ‘And thanks,’ Daniel added, ‘for putting a word in for me with Nick Holt.’

Her brows lifted in surprise. ‘He told you I’d done that?’

‘Yeah.’ His mouth twisted. ‘He still thinks I’m guilty, though, but he didn’t have any evidence to charge me, so he let me out on bail while they go on with their enquiries.’

Sarah frowned. ‘What made him suspect you in the first place, did he say?’

He shrugged awkwardly. ‘I’m not exactly sure. He just kept asking about some work I’d done at people’s houses - I’ve been getting work here and there at weekends or sometimes in the evenings after College. Word of mouth, really. One woman wanted a kitchen cupboard repaired and some other bits and pieces, so that she could get the house up to scratch before it went on the market... and after he saw what I’d done her neighbour asked me if I could build in a wardrobe for him - he wasn’t selling his house, though.’

‘Did you do work for anyone else?’

He nodded.
